Visual Characteristics
The hills are characterized by their rounded summits and steep slopes. Vegetation consists primarily of native grasses and scattered Monterey pines. The western slopes are generally more exposed, while the eastern slopes are partially sheltered. The summits reach elevations of approximately 922 feet (281 meters) and 909 feet (277 meters).

Twin Peaks is situated approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) south of the downtown San Francisco financial district. Access is primarily via Twin Peaks Boulevard, a paved road that circumnavigates the summits. Limited parking is available at designated pull-offs along the boulevard. Public transportation options include Muni bus lines 37 and 48, which stop at the base of the hills, requiring a walk to the summit.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The hills are composed of Franciscan Complex rocks, primarily sandstone and shale, formed during the Mesozoic Era. They represent a significant geological feature within the San Francisco Peninsula. Historically, the area was utilized by indigenous Ohlone people. The current road infrastructure was largely developed in the early 20th century.
Key Highlights & Activities

For optimal photography lighting, early morning (sunrise) and late afternoon (sunset) are recommended. The months of September and October often provide clearer skies and less fog compared to summer months. Wind conditions can be significant year-round.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the hills were named by Spanish explorers who saw them as resembling a woman's breasts. The area is known for its microclimate, often experiencing fog when other parts of the city are clear, and vice versa.
