Francis Case Memorial Bridge, Southeast Washington, USA Washington DC, North America

The Francis Case Memorial Bridge is a concrete arch bridge spanning the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. It connects the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of the city to Arlington, Virginia.

Visual Characteristics

The bridge is constructed primarily of reinforced concrete. It features a series of parabolic arches supporting the roadway. The deck is approximately 1,200 feet (366 meters) long and 70 feet (21 meters) wide, carrying six lanes of vehicular traffic and pedestrian walkways on either side. The concrete surfaces are generally gray, with some areas showing signs of weathering.

Location & Access Logistics

The Francis Case Memorial Bridge is located southwest of the White House. Access from downtown Washington, D.C. is via Constitution Avenue NW, which transitions into the bridge. From Arlington, Virginia, the bridge is accessible from Arlington Ridge Road. Parking is not available directly on the bridge. Public transportation options include Metrobus routes that cross the bridge, such as the 30s series buses. The nearest Metro station is Foggy Bottom-GWU on the Orange and Blue lines, approximately 0.5 miles (0.8 km) east of the bridge's D.C. approach.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Francis Case Memorial Bridge began in 1958 and was completed in 1962. It was named in honor of Francis Case, a former U.S. Senator from South Dakota. The bridge was designed to alleviate traffic congestion on nearby bridges and to provide a direct link between the capital and its Virginia suburbs. The Potomac River at this point is a tidal estuary, influenced by the Chesapeake Bay.

Key Highlights & Activities

Pedestrian access is provided via sidewalks on both sides of the bridge, offering views of the Potomac River and the Washington Channel. Cycling is permitted on the sidewalks. Observation of river traffic, including tour boats and recreational vessels, is possible from the bridge. The bridge serves as a primary vehicular artery for commuters.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The bridge itself has no dedicated amenities such as restrooms or food vendors. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong across the bridge. Shade is limited to the structural elements of the bridge itself. Restrooms and food services are available in the adjacent Foggy Bottom neighborhood and in Arlington.

Best Time to Visit

For photographic opportunities, early morning or late afternoon light can provide favorable illumination of the bridge structure and river. Midday can result in harsh shadows. Traffic volume is highest during weekday morning and evening commute hours (approximately 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM). Tidal fluctuations in the Potomac River are generally not a factor for bridge access or pedestrian use.

Facts & Legends

During its construction, the bridge was a significant engineering undertaking, employing advanced concrete pouring techniques for its time. A lesser-known fact is that the bridge's design was influenced by the need to accommodate potential future expansion of the adjacent George Washington Memorial Parkway.
