Giraffe Centre, Nairobi, Kenya, Africa

The Giraffe Centre is an educational and conservation facility located in Langata, Nairobi, Kenya. It serves as a sanctuary for the endangered Rothschild's giraffe.

Visual Characteristics

The primary structure is a raised wooden feeding platform, approximately 1.5 meters high, constructed from timber. The surrounding area consists of open grassland with scattered acacia trees, typical of the Kenyan savanna biome. The giraffes themselves are characterized by their distinctive long necks, patterned coats, and ossicones.

Location & Access Logistics

The Giraffe Centre is situated approximately 5 kilometers south of Nairobi's central business district. Access is via Langata Road. Turn onto Giraffe Centre Road, which is well-signposted. Ample parking is available on-site. Public transport options include matatus (minibuses) operating on routes that pass near the facility; passengers would typically disembark at the Giraffe Centre junction and walk the remaining distance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Giraffe Centre was established in 1979 by Jock Leslie-Melville and his wife Betty. Its original purpose was to provide a safe haven for the Rothschild's giraffe, which was facing extinction due to habitat loss. The facility operates as a breeding and rehabilitation center.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can hand-feed the resident Rothschild's giraffes from the elevated platform using specially provided pellets. Educational talks are conducted by center staff regarding giraffe biology and conservation efforts. A nature trail allows for observation of other indigenous wildlife.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on-site. Shaded areas are provided by the feeding platform and a small visitor center. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable within the facility. Food vendors are not present within the Giraffe Centre itself, but are available in the immediate vicinity.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for visitor interaction is generally between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM, and again between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, when the giraffes are most active and receptive to feeding. The dry seasons, from June to October and December to February, offer the most pleasant weather conditions.

Facts & Legends

The Rothschild's giraffe, also known as the Baringo giraffe, is the tallest subspecies of giraffe. A specific tip for visitors is to wear clothing that covers the arms and legs, as the giraffes' tongues can be rough.
