Kawah Putih, Bandung, Indonesia, Asia
Kawah Putih is a volcanic crater lake located in the Bandung Regency of West Java, Indonesia. It is known for its striking white and turquoise acidic waters.
Visual Characteristics
The crater lake exhibits a dynamic color palette, ranging from milky white to turquoise and sometimes greenish hues, influenced by the concentration of sulfur and water temperature. The surrounding crater walls are composed of light-colored volcanic rock and sediment. Vegetation is sparse around the immediate lake edge due to the acidic environment, with some hardy plants present on the higher slopes.
Location & Access Logistics
Kawah Putih is situated approximately 50 kilometers south of Bandung city center. Access is via Jalan Raya Soreang-Ciwidey. From Bandung, take the road towards Soreang, then follow signs for Ciwidey. After entering the Ciwidey area, follow the signs for Kawah Putih. Parking is available at the main entrance, with shuttle vehicles (known as Ontang-anting) required to reach the crater rim due to road restrictions. Public transport to Ciwidey is available via buses from Bandung's Leuwi Panjang terminal, from which local minibuses (angkot) can be taken towards Kawah Putih.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Kawah Putih is a phreatic eruption crater formed from the Mount Patuha volcano. The current crater lake was formed following an eruption in the 10th century. The acidic nature of the lake is a result of volcanic gases, primarily sulfur dioxide, dissolving in the water.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk along the designated pathways to the crater rim for viewing. Observation decks provide elevated vantage points. Photography is a primary activity due to the unique landscape. Small boats are sometimes available for short excursions on the lake, weather permitting.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the parking area and near the crater entrance. Limited shaded areas are present near the viewing platforms. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors and small shops selling souvenirs are located at the main entrance and parking area.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is generally in the morning, between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, when the light is softer and the colors of the lake are often most vivid. The dry season, from May to September, offers more stable weather conditions. The lake's appearance can change with rainfall, so clear days are preferable.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the name "Kawah Putih" (White Crater) originated from the belief that the area was once a battlefield where white spirits resided. Another notable fact is the presence of sulfur crystals, which are sometimes collected by visitors.
