Kek Lok Si Temple is a Buddhist temple complex situated on Penang Island, Malaysia. It is one of the largest and most ornate Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia.

The temple complex features multiple pagodas, prayer halls, and statues constructed from granite, marble, and bronze. The main pagoda, the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas, stands seven stories high and is adorned with intricate carvings and Buddhist iconography. The complex is painted in a palette of reds, golds, and whites, with extensive use of decorative tiles and roof ornaments. The grounds are landscaped with gardens, ponds, and numerous smaller shrines.
Location & Access Logistics
Kek Lok Si Temple is located in Air Itam, approximately 7 kilometers west of George Town, Penang. Access is via Jalan Air Itam. Public bus routes 201, 203, 204, and 502 from George Town terminate near the temple entrance. Limited street parking is available in the vicinity, with dedicated parking areas further down the road. A funicular railway operates from the base of the hill to the mid-level of the temple complex.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Kek Lok Si Temple began in 1890 and was completed in 1905. It was founded by Beow Lean, a Buddhist monk from Fujian, China. The temple was built to serve as a center for Buddhist worship and education. The site is situated on a hillside, offering views of the surrounding landscape.

Visitors can ascend the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas for panoramic views. The main prayer hall houses a large bronze statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. The temple grounds include the Kuan Yin statue, a 30.2-meter-tall bronze structure. Walking tours of the various temple structures and gardens are possible. The funicular railway provides access to higher levels.

A unique feature of the temple is the presence of the Kuan Yin statue, which was erected in 2002. The temple complex is designed to represent the Pure Land of the Buddha.
