Lamu Fort is a historical fortification located in the town of Lamu, Kenya, on the island of Lamu.

Lamu Fort is situated in the center of Lamu town. Access to Lamu Island is typically via ferry from the mainland town of Mokowe. From Mokowe, a 30-45 minute boat ride will bring visitors to Lamu town. The fort is within walking distance from the main jetty. There is no vehicle access within Lamu town itself.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of Lamu Fort began in 1810 and was completed in 1821. It was commissioned by Seyyid Said bin Sultan, the Sultan of Oman, to defend the island against Portuguese incursions and to control trade routes. The fort was built using locally quarried coral stone, a common building material in the region.
