Shela Beach, Lamu, Kenya, Africa
Shela Beach is a 3km long stretch of sand located on the eastern coast of Lamu Island, Kenya.
Visual Characteristics
The beach consists of fine, pale yellow sand. The shoreline is backed by a line of dunes supporting sparse vegetation, primarily grasses and low shrubs. The Indian Ocean waters are typically clear with a turquoise hue, becoming deeper blue further offshore. At the northern end, the beach transitions into the village of Shela, characterized by coral stone buildings with carved wooden doors.
Location & Access Logistics
Shela Beach is situated approximately 4km south of Lamu Town. Access is primarily via footpaths from Shela village or by boat from Lamu Town. Boat transfers from Lamu Town typically take 15-20 minutes. There is no vehicle access to Shela village or the beach. Limited public transport exists within Lamu Town itself, with donkey transport being the primary mode for local movement.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Shela village has a documented history dating back to the 14th century, with evidence of Swahili settlement. The beach itself is a natural coastal feature formed by oceanic currents and sand deposition. The dunes are a result of wind action on the sand, stabilized by vegetation.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking the length of the beach is a primary activity. Swimming is possible, though currents can be strong at times. Kite surfing and windsurfing are popular during the monsoon seasons (June-August and December-February). Birdwatching is also possible in the dune areas. Dhow sailing trips can be arranged from Shela village.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Within Shela village, there are several guesthouses and restaurants offering food and drink. Public restrooms are not consistently available along the beach itself but can be found within the village establishments. Shade is limited to areas near the village or under the few scattered trees. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is generally available in Shela village, but can be intermittent on the beach.
Best Time to Visit
For swimming and water activities, the calmer months between March and May are suitable. For kite surfing and windsurfing, the monsoon seasons (June-August and December-February) provide the necessary winds. Sunrise and sunset offer optimal lighting conditions for photography due to the angle of the sun relative to the beach.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the ruins of an ancient mosque at the southern end of Shela village are the burial site of a holy man. The beach is also known for its population of sandpipers and other shorebirds.
