Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the island of Lamu, off the coast of Kenya.
It is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa.

The town consists of narrow, winding alleyways constructed from coral stone and mangrove timber. Buildings are typically two to three stories high, featuring thick walls, arched doorways, and carved wooden doors. Rooftops often have flat surfaces used for living and sleeping. Location & Access Logistics
Lamu Old Town is situated on the eastern side of Lamu Island. Access is primarily via boat from the mainland town of Mokowe, which is reachable by road from Malindi (approximately 180km) or Mombasa (approximately 350km). There are no roads within the Old Town; transport is by foot or donkey. Regular dhow services operate between Mokowe jetty and Lamu jetty. The journey from Mokowe to Lamu jetty takes approximately 20-30 minutes.

Lamu Old Town was founded in the 14th century by Arab and Persian traders. Its development was driven by its strategic location for trade routes.
