The Lekki Conservation Centre is a 21-hectare protected area located in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria. It serves as a nature reserve and a biodiversity conservation site.

Visual Characteristics

The centre features a prominent 401-meter-long canopy walkway suspended 15 meters above the ground. The walkway is constructed from wood and metal. The surrounding environment consists of mangrove forest, freshwater swamp, and savanna grassland. The water bodies within the reserve are typically brown due to sediment from the mangrove ecosystem.

Location & Access Logistics

The Lekki Conservation Centre is situated off the Lekki-Epe Expressway, approximately 25 kilometers east of Victoria Island, Lagos. Access is via the Lekki-Epe Expressway. There is a dedicated parking lot on-site. Public transport options include various bus services that travel along the Lekki-Epe Expressway; visitors would disembark and walk or take a short taxi ride to the entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Established in 1990 by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), the Lekki Conservation Centre was created to protect the natural habitat of the Lekki Peninsula and serve as an environmental education and recreation facility. The area's ecological origin is a mix of coastal mangrove forest and freshwater swamp, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Key Highlights & Activities

The primary activity is traversing the canopy walkway, offering elevated views of the ecosystem. Visitors can also explore nature trails on foot. Bird watching is a common activity due to the variety of avian species present. Picnicking is permitted in designated areas.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the entrance and at intervals along the trails. Shaded areas are provided at rest points. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the centre. There are no on-site food vendors, but food stalls and restaurants are located along the nearby Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is generally in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather conditions with less rainfall. There are no specific tide requirements for accessing the main areas of the centre.

Facts & Legends

The Lekki Conservation Centre is home to a family of Mona monkeys and bushbucks. A specific tip for visitors is to wear insect repellent, especially during the wetter months, as mosquitoes are present in the mangrove areas.
