The Lotus Mahal is a 16th-century pavilion located in Hampi, Karnataka, India. It is situated within the Royal Centre of the Vijayanagara Empire.

Visual Characteristics

This two-story structure exhibits Indo-Islamic architectural influences. It is constructed primarily from brick and lime plaster. The building features a symmetrical facade with arched openings on both levels. The roof is pyramidal, with decorative finials. The exterior walls are painted in a pale ochre color.

Location & Access Logistics

The Lotus Mahal is located within the Hampi Bazaar area, approximately 2 kilometers west of the Tungabhadra River. Access is via the main Hampi road (SH 104). Parking is available at designated lots near the Royal Centre entrance. The nearest bus stop is in Hampi village, with regular services from Hospet. Auto-rickshaws are also available.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Lotus Mahal was constructed during the reign of Krishnadevaraya in the early 16th century. Its precise original purpose is debated, but it is believed to have served as a pleasure pavilion or a meeting place for the royal women of the Vijayanagara court.

Visitors can observe the unique architectural design of the pavilion. Photography of the exterior is permitted. Guided tours of the Royal Centre often include a stop at the Lotus Mahal.

The best time of day for photography is in the late afternoon, approximately 3 PM to 5 PM, when the sunlight provides optimal illumination on the facade. The dry season, from October to March, offers the most favorable weather conditions.

Facts & Legends

A local legend suggests that the pavilion was designed to resemble a lotus bud, hence its name. It is one of the few structures in the Royal Centre that was not significantly damaged during the sacking of Vijayanagara in 1565.
