Morne Bleu Research Station, Arima, Trinidad and Tobago, North America

The Morne Bleu Research Station is a scientific facility situated in the Arima-valley_arima" class="underline">Arima Valley of Trinidad and Tobago.

It functions as a center for ecological and biological research within the island's diverse natural environment.

Visual Characteristics

The station comprises several low-profile concrete structures, painted in muted earth tones to blend with the surrounding rainforest. Buildings are single-story, with exposed aggregate concrete walls and corrugated metal roofing. The site is characterized by dense tropical vegetation, including mature hardwood trees and a variety of epiphytic plants. Access paths are primarily unpaved, with some sections reinforced with gravel.

Location & Access Logistics

Morne Bleu Research Station is located approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Arima town center. Access is via the Priority Bus Route (PBR) to Arima, then continuing on Blanchisseuse Road (North Coast Road) for approximately 12 kilometers. A sign indicates the turn-off onto an unpaved access track, which is approximately 1.5 kilometers long and suitable for 4WD vehicles. Standard vehicles may have difficulty navigating the track, especially after heavy rainfall. No public transport directly serves the station; private vehicle or pre-arranged transport is required.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The station was established in the late 1970s by the University of the West Indies for the study of tropical biodiversity and forest ecology. Its location was chosen for its proximity to undisturbed primary rainforest, representative of the Northern Range's ecological systems. The area is geologically composed of argillaceous sandstone and shale formations, characteristic of the Northern Range.

Key Highlights & Activities

Research activities are the primary focus. Visitors, by prior arrangement, may observe ongoing studies. Designated trails around the station offer opportunities for observing forest flora and fauna. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the high species diversity. Limited opportunities exist for guided walks focusing on forest ecology, subject to researcher availability.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic laboratory facilities and limited accommodation are present for resident researchers. Restrooms are available for authorized personnel and pre-arranged visitors. Shade is provided by the dense forest canopy. Cell phone signal is intermittent and generally unreliable within the station grounds. No food vendors are present at the station; visitors must bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from January to May, offers the most favorable conditions for access and outdoor observation due to reduced rainfall. The early morning hours (06:00-09:00) provide optimal lighting for photography and increased wildlife activity. High tide is not a relevant factor for this inland location.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests the area is frequented by spirits of the forest, particularly around ancient ceiba trees. A verified historical oddity is the presence of rare endemic orchids, documented by early botanical surveys conducted in the vicinity.
