Mount Rinjani, Lombok, Indonesia, Asia

Mount Rinjani is an active volcano located on the island of Lombok, Indonesia. It is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia.

Visual Characteristics

Mount Rinjani is a stratovolcano with a summit elevation of 3,726 meters (12,224 feet). The volcano's caldera contains a crater lake, Segara Anak, which is approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) in diameter. A smaller cone, Gunung Barujari, is located within the caldera and is an active lava dome.

Location & Access Logistics

The primary access point for climbing Mount Rinjani is through the village of Senaru, located on the northern side of the mountain. Senaru is approximately a 2-3 hour drive from Mataram, Lombok's capital city. Transportation from Mataram typically involves hiring a private car or using local buses to Bayan, followed by a shorter ride to Senaru. The nearest airport is Lombok International Airport (LOP), located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Mataram. Parking is available at the Rinjani National Park entrance in Senaru, with fees applicable. Public transport directly to Senaru is limited; most visitors arrange transport in advance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Mount Rinjani is part of the Sunda Arc, a chain of volcanoes formed by the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. Its last major eruption was in 1994. The mountain is a protected area within the Mount Rinjani National Park, established to conserve its unique biodiversity and geological features.

Key Highlights & Activities

Trekking to the summit is the primary activity, typically requiring a 2-3 day expedition. Hiking trails lead to the crater rim, the crater lake (Segara Anak), and the summit. Camping is permitted at designated sites along the trekking routes. Visitors can observe hot springs near Segara Anak. Photography opportunities are available at sunrise and sunset from the crater rim.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic facilities are available at the Rinjani National Park entrance in Senaru, including information centers and registration points. Along the trekking routes, basic shelters and designated camping areas are provided. Restroom facilities are limited to the starting points and some campsites. Cell phone signal is intermittent and generally unavailable at higher elevations. Food vendors are present in Senaru village but not on the mountain trails; trekkers must carry their own supplies or arrange for guides who provide food.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from April to September, is the optimal period for trekking Mount Rinjani due to more stable weather conditions. The best time of day for photography is generally during the early morning and late afternoon for optimal lighting on the caldera and surrounding landscape. High tide or low tide is not a relevant factor for this mountain trek.

Facts & Legends

Local Sasak folklore associates Mount Rinjani with the spirits of ancestors and deities. It is believed that the crater lake, Segara Anak, is a sacred place where offerings are made. A specific tip for visitors is to acclimatize properly before attempting the summit climb, as the altitude can cause severe altitude sickness.
