Senggigi Beach, Lombok, Indonesia, Asia

Senggigi Beach is a coastal area located on the western side of Lombok Island, Indonesia. It is characterized by its long stretch of sand and clear waters.

Visual Characteristics

The beach features light gray to white sand. The water color ranges from turquoise to deep blue depending on depth and light conditions. Coconut palms line the back of the beach. The coastline is approximately 10 kilometers long.

Location & Access Logistics

Senggigi Beach is situated about 12 kilometers northwest of Mataram, the provincial capital. Access is via Jalan Raya Senggigi, a paved road. Private vehicle parking is available at designated points along the road and at hotels. Public transport includes local minibuses (bemos) connecting Mataram to Senggigi. Boat transfers are available from Bali to the nearby Bangsal Harbor, from which taxis or scooters can be hired.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Senggigi's geological origin is part of the Sunda Shelf, with its coastline shaped by volcanic activity and marine erosion over millennia. Historically, it was a small fishing village before developing into a tourist destination.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is possible in designated areas. Snorkeling and diving can be done around the coral reefs offshore, particularly at the northern end. Surfing is an option during the wet season (November to April) when waves are larger. Sunset viewing is a common activity due to the western orientation of the beach.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at hotels and restaurants. Shade is provided by natural vegetation and some man-made structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors and restaurants are located along the main road and within resort areas.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for clear water visibility for snorkeling and diving is during the dry season, from May to September. The best time of day for photography is late afternoon, approximately one hour before sunset, for optimal lighting. High tide is generally preferred for swimming.

Facts & Legends

A local legend speaks of a benevolent sea spirit guarding the waters of Senggigi, ensuring calm seas for fishermen. A specific tip for visitors is to explore the smaller coves north of the main stretch for quieter beach access.
