The museum is housed in the historic arsenal (Zeughaus) and Echter building of the fortress. The galleries feature thick stone walls, massive wooden ceiling beams, and specialized climate-controlled glass cases for delicate wood carvings.

Public Transit: Seasonal bus line 9 from Würzburg Residence or a 20-minute uphill walk from the Alte Mainbrücke.

Historical Origin
The museum was established in 1947 to house regional treasures following the destruction of the previous city collections during WWII. It consolidated holdings from the Historical Association of Lower Franconia and the city of Würzburg. In 2017, it was elevated to a Bavarian State Museum and renamed Museum für Franken.
Key Highlights & Activities
Riemenschneider Collection: The world's largest collection of works by the late-Gothic sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider, including his famous sandstone figures and unpainted limewood altarpieces.
Franconian Folklore: Displays of traditional regional costumes, furniture, and agricultural tools.
City Models: Two detailed models of Würzburg: one showing the city in 1525 and another depicting the total destruction following the 1945 bombing.
Wine Culture: A dedicated section on the history of Franconian viticulture, featuring historic wine presses and drinking vessels.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The museum spans two separate buildings within the fortress complex. While the main galleries are accessible via lifts, the historic nature of the fortress involves uneven cobblestones and some steep inclines between buildings. It includes a museum shop. 5G signal is stable.
Best Time to Visit
Weekdays: To view the Riemenschneider sculptures without the high volume of weekend tourists.
Spring/Summer: To combine the museum visit with a walk through the adjacent Princes' Garden.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the reconstructed city model; it serves as a primary educational tool for understanding the scale of architectural loss in 1945. Historically, the building housing the collection was originally the fortress armory, designed to hold weaponry for thousands of soldiers.
