Old Main Bridge, Wurzburg, Germany, Europe
Old Main Bridge (Alte Mainbrücke) is the oldest bridge in Würzburg, connecting the Old Town to the Marienberg Fortress district.
Visual Characteristics
A massive stone arch bridge constructed from shell limestone, featuring eight arches. It is lined with 12 monumental sandstone statues (approx. 4.5 meters tall) of saints and rulers, including Saint Kilian and Charlemagne. The bridge provides an unobstructed view of the vineyards and the fortress.
Location & Access Logistics
Connects Domstraße (Old Town) to Zeller Straße (Left Bank).
Transit: 5-minute walk from the Town Hall (Rathaus) or Cathedral (Dom).
Access: Pedestrian only; accessible 24/7.
Admission: Free.
Parking: Use "Parkhaus am Kranen" or "Marktplatz."
Historical Origin
Built between 1473 and 1543 to replace a previous Romanesque bridge destroyed by floods. The characteristic Baroque statues were added around 1730. It was the city's only bridge across the Main until 1886. In 1945, the bridge was partially blown up by German troops but was reconstructed shortly after the war.
Key Highlights & Activities
Brückenschoppen: A local tradition where people buy regional Franconian wine from nearby taverns (like Alte Mainmühle) and drink it on the bridge.
Statuary: Twelve figures including the city's patron saints (Kilian, Kolonat, and Totnan).
Photography: One of the most famous vantage points in Germany for capturing the Marienberg Fortress and the river landscape.
River Navigation: View of the locks and the historical "Alter Kranen" (Old Crane) downstream.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The bridge surface is paved with historic cobblestones. It is fully wheelchair accessible. Several wine stands and small restaurants are located at the eastern bridgehead. 5G signal is robust.
Best Time to Visit
Late Afternoon/Sunset: For the "Brückenschoppen" social atmosphere.
Early Morning: To photograph the statues and the fortress without crowds.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the asymmetrical arch design, necessitated by the varying currents and rock formations of the riverbed at the time of construction. Legend suggests that the bridge is protected by its patron saints, and tradition dictates that students graduating from the local university should cross the bridge to ensure future success.
