Saint Kilian Cathedral, Wurzburg, Germany, Europe
St. Kilian's Cathedral (Würzburger Dom) is a Romanesque church and the seat of the Bishop of Würzburg. It is the fourth-largest Romanesque cathedral in Germany.
Visual Characteristics
The cathedral is a massive triple-aisled basilica with two towers at the eastern end. The exterior is characterized by its unadorned, red-sandstone Romanesque facade. The interior presents a stark contrast: the nave retains its simple Romanesque structure, while the chancel and transepts are heavily decorated with ornate Baroque stucco.

Historical Origin
Construction began in 1040 under Bishop Bruno. It was dedicated to Saint Kilian, an Irish missionary and martyr. The cathedral underwent significant structural changes over centuries, including the addition of Baroque elements in the 1700s. Following near-total destruction during the 1945 firebombing, it was reconstructed between 1946 and 1967 in a style that combined its original Romanesque elements with modern design.

Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the reconstruction of the vaulted ceiling; after the 1945 collapse, architects chose a simplified flat wooden ceiling for the nave rather than rebuilding the heavy stone vaults, creating unique acoustics. Legend says the cathedral stands on the exact site where Saint Kilian and his companions were martyred in 689 AD.
