The Larabanga Mystic stoneКликнете, за да отворите страничния панел за повече информация is a sacred geological landmark situated on the outskirts of the village of Larabanga in the Savannah Region. It is intrinsically linked to the founding of the Larabanga Ancient Mosque and serves as a significant site of pilgrimage and local oral history.
Visual Characteristics
The landmark consists of a large, naturally shaped granite boulder partially embedded in the earth. It features a weathered, greyish-tan surface with smoothed edges from environmental exposure. The stone is surrounded by a low concrete and metal perimeter fence to designate it as a protected heritage site and prevent direct physical encroachment.
Location & Access Logistics
The stone is located along the Sawla-Damongo Road (N12), approximately 0.1km west of the Larabanga Ancient Mosque entrance. It is roughly 10km west of the Mole National Park headquarters. Travelers can reach the site via private vehicle or taxi from Damongo, a drive of approximately 15 minutes. Public "tro-tros" on the Sawla route provide access to Larabanga village, from which the stone is a 5-minute walk.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Geologically, the stone is a granite outcrop characteristic of the crystalline basement rocks found in the northern savanna zones of Ghana. Historically, it is the center of a 15th-century legend involving Ayuba, the founder of the local mosque. According to tradition, the stone marks the exact spot where Ayuba rested and received a divine vision to construct the mosque.
Key Highlights & Activities
Guided storytelling is the primary activity, where local keepers recount the legends associated with the stone’s immovable nature. Visitors typically view the stone as part of a combined tour with the Larabanga Ancient Mosque. Photography of the stone and its commemorative plaque is permitted, though visitors are expected to maintain a respectful distance.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There is no significant infrastructure at the stone itself; visitors utilize the facilities at the nearby mosque visitor center, which include basic seating and ticketing. Shade is limited to a few nearby trees. Cell phone signal (4G) is reliable due to its proximity to the main road.
Best Time to Visit
The site is open for viewing 24 hours a day, though guided tours are best conducted between 08:00 and 17:00. The dry season (November to April) is recommended for easier walking conditions. Morning visits provide better lighting for photography and avoid the peak afternoon heat common in the Savannah Region.
Facts & Legends
The most prominent legend surrounding the stone is its refusal to be moved. During the construction of the Sawla-Damongo road in the mid-20th century, engineers reportedly attempted to displace the stone with heavy machinery to make way for the pavement. Local accounts state that the stone returned to its original position each time it was moved, eventually forcing the contractors to divert the road around it.
