The landscape is characterized by open savanna grasslands, acacia woodlands, and riverine forests. Elevation ranges from 1,800 to 2,100 meters above sea level. The terrain is generally flat to gently rolling, with occasional rocky outcrops. Vegetation density varies, with denser tree cover along the Ewaso Nyiro River.

The main entrance gate is clearly signposted off the highway. Ample parking is available at the main visitor center and lodges. Public transport options to Nanyuki town are available, from which local taxis or pre-arranged transport can be used to reach the conservancy entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Ol Pejeta was established in 1974 as a cattle ranch. In 1979, it was purchased by the Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy. It was converted into a wildlife conservancy in 2005, with a focus on conservation and community development. Ecologically, it is part of the larger Laikipia Plateau ecosystem, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include guided game drives (morning, afternoon, and night), walking safaris, bird watching, and visits to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Visitors can also participate in rhino tracking and learn about conservation efforts. Photography is permitted throughout the conservancy.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the main visitor center, lodges, and designated picnic sites. Shade is provided by acacia trees and purpose-built shelters at some viewing points. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the conservancy, though it can be intermittent in remote areas. Food vendors are located at the main visitor center and within the lodges.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for game viewing is during the dry seasons, from June to October and December to February. Early morning (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:30 PM) offer optimal lighting for photography. There are no specific tide requirements as it is a terrestrial environment.
Facts & Legends
Ol Pejeta is home to the last three northern white rhinos in the world, which are under 24-hour protection. A unique tip for visitors is to inquire about the conservancy's community outreach programs, which offer insights into the human-wildlife coexistence initiatives.
