Old Jaffa, Jaffa, Israel, Asia

Old Jaffa is an ancient port city located on a 40-meter-high kurkar sandstone ridge in the southern part of Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel. It serves as a strategic maritime hub overlooking the Mediterranean coastline.

Visual Characteristics

The area is characterized by narrow, winding limestone alleyways and stone masonry buildings reflecting Ottoman and Crusader architectural influences. The elevation reaches approximately 40 meters above sea level, featuring rugged sandstone cliffs, stone-paved squares, and the distinct red-brick facade of St. Peter's Church.

Location & Access Logistics

The site is situated 3.5km south of Tel Aviv’s city center. Access is via Herbert Samuel Street or Yefet Street, with public transport provided by Dan bus lines 10, 18, and 25 stopping at the Jaffa Clock Tower. Parking is available at the Jaffa Port paid lot and surrounding municipal street meters.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Archaeological remains date the settlement to the 18th century BCE (Middle Bronze Age), though it functioned as an Egyptian administrative center under Thutmose III by the 15th century BCE. The current urban fabric is primarily Ottoman (18th–19th century); geologically, the site sits on a natural kurkar (aeolianite) ridge formation.

Key Highlights & Activities

Walking tours through the Zodiac Alleyways depart from the central square. Visiting the Ilana Goor Museum for local art and exploring the Jaffa Flea Market for antiques are primary activities. Boat tours operate from the Jaffa Port during daylight hours.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Public restrooms are located at Kedumim Square and within the Jaffa Port area. Mobile signal strength (4G/5G) is consistent throughout the ridge. Shade is available in the narrow alleys but sparse in open squares; food vendors are concentrated at the port waterfront and flea market.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal months for weather are March through May and October through November. Photography is best during the golden hour before sunset due to the westward orientation. While the district is open 24 hours, commercial galleries typically operate between 10:00 and 18:00.

Facts & Legends

Biblical tradition identifies this port as the departure point for the prophet Jonah before his encounter with the whale. A specific site tip is the Wishing Bridge in Abrasha Park, where visitors are encouraged to touch their bronze zodiac sign while facing the sea to fulfill a wish.
