Plonlein, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, Europe
Plönlein is a world-renowned architectural ensemble in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, serving as the town’s most iconic photographic landmark.
Visual Characteristics
The site consists of a narrow, yellow timber-framed house with a pointed gable, situated at a fork in the road. It is framed by two historic city gates: the Kobolzeller Tor (descending to the Tauber Valley) and the Siebersturm (leading to the hospital quarter). The aesthetic is characterized by uneven cobblestone streets and a small fountain (Plönlein translates to "Small Square at a Fountain") in front of the yellow house.
Location & Access Logistics
Located at Untere Schmiedgasse, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Access: Public thoroughfare; accessible 24/7.
Admission: Free.
Parking: No parking at the site. Use visitor lots P2 (Spitaltor) or P1 (Friedhof) located outside the city walls.
Transit: Approximately a 12-minute walk from Rothenburg ob der Tauber train station.
Historical Origin
The ensemble dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The yellow house was originally a residence, while the surrounding gates were part of the town’s first and second fortification rings. The site remains largely unchanged since the late Middle Ages and was a primary inspiration for the architectural style of Walt Disney’s Pinocchio (1940).
Key Highlights & Activities
Photography: This is the most photographed spot in the town. The ideal angle is from the center of the Schmiedgasse looking south.
Kobolzeller Tor: A double gate with a barbican and portcullis, historically guarding the entrance from the valley.
Siebersturm: A 14th-century tower that served as a gatehouse for the expanding southern district.
Wandering the Walls: The nearby Spitaltor provides access to the town's walkable fortification wall.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The area is a high-traffic pedestrian zone. The terrain is a steep incline with uneven historic cobblestones, making it difficult for wheelchairs and strollers. Numerous cafes and artisan shops are located in the immediate vicinity along the Schmiedgasse. 5G signal is stable.
Best Time to Visit
Sunrise/Dawn: To photograph the landmark without the high volume of tour groups.
Evening: The illumination of the timber-framed houses and the street lanterns creates a cinematic medieval atmosphere.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the dual-level topography of the square; the road to the left stays level with the town, while the road to the right drops sharply toward the river, creating the characteristic "fork" appearance. Historically, the Plönlein served as a checkpoint for merchants entering the town's southern trade district.
