Rothenburg Castle, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, Europe
Rothenburg Castle (Rothenburg Burganlage) refers to the site of the former Hohenstaufen imperial castle, now preserved as the Burggarten (Castle Garden), located on the western tip of the town’s plateau.
Visual Characteristics
The site no longer features a central fortress but exists as a landscaped park surrounded by the original stone fortification walls. It offers a 180-degree panoramic view of the Tauber Valley and the town's southern skyline. The entrance is marked by the Burgtor (Castle Gate), the tallest gate tower in the city, featuring a massive mask through whose mouth hot oil was historically poured on attackers.
Location & Access Logistics
Located at Alte Burg, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Access: The park is public and accessible 24/7.
Admission: Free.
Transit: A 10-minute walk west from the Market Square.
Parking: No parking at the site. Use visitor lots P1 through P5 outside the city walls.
Historical Origin
In 1142, King Conrad III built the Imperial Castle on this spur. It was the starting point for the development of the town. The castle was almost entirely destroyed by a major earthquake in 1356. The citizens did not rebuild the fortress, instead using the stones to expand the city’s own walls and buildings. Only the Blasius Chapel (St. Blaise's Chapel) remains from the original complex.
Key Highlights & Activities
Burgtor (Castle Gate): Features a "small door within a large door" (the Eye of the Needle) to allow only one person at a time to enter after dark.
Blasius Chapel: A Romanesque chapel containing murals from the 14th century and a memorial to the victims of the World Wars.
The Viewpoints: Several stone balconies along the wall provide views of the Toppler Castle (a late-medieval "garden house") in the valley below.
Garden Monuments: Includes a memorial to the 1298 Pogrom and a monument to the Hohenstaufen dynasty.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The garden features gravel paths and numerous benches. While the park itself is relatively level, the approach through the town involves cobblestones. Public restrooms are located near the Burgtor entrance. 5G signal is stable.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset: The western orientation provides the town’s best vantage point for watching the sun set over the Tauber Valley.
Spring/Summer: When the formal flower beds and geometric hedges are in full bloom.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the mask on the Burgtor; it is one of the few surviving examples of a "pitch nose" (Pech-Nase) used for defensive liquids. Legend states that the 1356 earthquake was so localized that it leveled the castle on the hill but left most of the town's civilian buildings intact, which the residents interpreted as a divine sign to move the center of power to the Market Square.
