Rothenburg Town Hall, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, Europe
Rothenburg Town Hall (Rathaus) is the central landmark of the Market Square in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It is a dual-style architectural complex consisting of a Gothic rear and a Renaissance front.
Visual Characteristics
The complex is divided into two distinct parts:
The Gothic Section (1250–1400): Facing the Herrngasse, this part is characterized by white plaster, pointed gables, and a 60-meter-high belfry.
The Renaissance Section (1572–1578): Facing the Market Square, it features a grand stone facade with an ornate portico, a balcony, and three sculptural coats of arms. It is built from local light-colored sandstone.
Location & Access Logistics
Located at Marktplatz 1, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Access: The exterior is always visible. The Town Hall Tower and the Imperial Hall (Kaisersaal) are accessible via paid admission.
Tower Hours: Generally 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM (seasonal variations apply).
Access Note: The final ascent to the tower platform is extremely narrow and involves a steep wooden ladder.
Parking: No parking on the Market Square; use designated visitor lots P1 through P5 outside the city walls (approx. 10-minute walk).
Historical Origin
The original 13th-century Gothic town hall was partially destroyed by a fire in 1501. While the eastern Gothic wing remained, the western side was replaced by the Renaissance structure designed by architect Leonhard Weidmann. This transition reflects the city's shift from medieval fortress to a wealthy Renaissance trade hub.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Tower Ascent: Offers the highest panoramic view over the town's red-roofed skyline and the Tauber Valley.
Imperial Hall (Kaisersaal): A grand ceremonial hall used for theater and cultural events; it famously hosted the "Meistertrunk" (Master Draught) historical play.
The Historiengewölbe (Historical Vaults): A museum located in the basement and former dungeons, documenting Rothenburg's history during the Thirty Years' War.
The Portico: A popular meeting point on the Market Square, featuring the municipal arms and elaborate stone carvings.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The Town Hall is the seat of local government. Public restrooms are located in the adjacent courtyard. The main square is flat but composed of historic cobblestones. The tower ascent is not wheelchair accessible. 5G signal is stable.
Best Time to Visit
8:00 PM: To meet the Night Watchman who starts his tour in front of the Town Hall.
On the Hour (11:00 AM – 3:00 PM / 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM): To see the nearby Ratstrinkstube clock figures perform the "Master Draught" scene adjacent to the Town Hall.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is that the tower has no foundations of its own; it rests on the gable of the Gothic building. Legend states that during the Thirty Years' War in 1631, General Tilly agreed to spare the city from destruction if a councilman could drink 3.25 liters of wine in one go-a feat known as the Meistertrunk, which supposedly took place within these walls.
