The Portland Aerial Tram is a public transportation system connecting the South Waterfront district to the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) campus in Portland, Oregon.
It provides a 3.3-minute aerial transit between two distinct elevation points.
Visual Characteristics
The tram consists of two cabins, each capable of carrying 75 passengers and two wheelchairs. The cabins are constructed with large glass panels for panoramic views. The support towers are steel lattice structures. The tram line spans approximately 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) at a maximum height of 400 feet (120 meters) above the ground.
Location & Access Logistics
The lower station is located at 3303 SW Bond Ave, Portland, OR 97239, adjacent to the South Waterfront MAX light rail station. Access is via the MAX Green and Yellow Lines. The upper station is situated at 333 SW Gibbon St, Portland, OR 97239, on the OHSU campus. Parking is available at both the South Waterfront and OHSU campuses, with fees applicable. The tram operates on a schedule independent of MAX, with departures every 4 minutes during peak hours.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction began in 2005 and the tram opened in 2007. It was a joint project between the City of Portland, OHSU, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. The primary purpose was to improve access to OHSU's medical facilities and research centers, and to facilitate development in the South Waterfront area. The route crosses the Willamette River and traverses an urban landscape.
Key Highlights & Activities
Riding the tram offers views of the Willamette River, downtown Portland, and the Cascade Mountains on clear days. Passengers can disembark at the OHSU campus to explore its grounds or access medical services. The South Waterfront station provides access to parks, restaurants, and residential areas.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at both the lower and upper stations. Limited shaded areas are present at the stations. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally consistent throughout the tram ride and at both stations. Food vendors and restaurants are located in the South Waterfront district near the lower station and within the OHSU campus.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting and visibility of the city and surrounding mountains, early morning or late afternoon are recommended. The tram operates year-round. Weather conditions can affect visibility; clear days provide the best panoramic views. No specific tide requirements apply.
Facts & Legends
The Portland Aerial Tram was one of the first urban aerial tramways in the United States. A unique operational detail is that the tram cabins are designed to be self-sufficient in case of power outages, with backup generators and emergency braking systems.
