The Grotto, officially known as the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, is a 62-acre Catholic sanctuary located in Northeast Portland, Oregon.
Visual Characteristics
The sanctuary features a lower level with a 110-foot cliff face, carved into which is a 20-foot high marble statue of Mary holding the body of Jesus. Above the statue is a cave-like grotto. The upper level, accessed by a 24-person elevator, contains a chapel, a meditation chapel, and extensive gardens. The grounds are landscaped with evergreen trees, shrubs, and floral displays.

The Grotto is situated at 8840 NE Skidmore Street, Portland, OR 97220. It is approximately 10 miles northeast of downtown Portland. Access is via I-205 North, taking Exit 21 for NE Sandy Boulevard. Turn west onto NE Sandy Boulevard, then north onto NE 82nd Avenue, and finally west onto NE Skidmore Street. Ample free parking is available on-site. Public transport options include TriMet Bus Line 12 (Sandy Blvd/122nd Ave), which stops within walking distance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Grotto was founded in 1924 by Father Ambrose Cardoza, a Belgian-born Catholic priest. He purchased the land with the intention of creating a place of prayer and reflection. The cliff face was a natural geological formation. The sanctuary's development has been ongoing since its inception, with additions and expansions over the decades.

Visitors can explore the lower level grotto and gardens. The upper level offers access to the Chapel of Mary, the Meditation Chapel, and the Columbarium. Walking the labyrinth and the various garden paths is a primary activity. Mass is celebrated daily in the Chapel of Mary. The elevator provides access to the upper level.

Restrooms are available on both the lower and upper levels. Shaded areas are present throughout the gardens. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are not present on-site, but a gift shop offers light refreshments and souvenirs.
Best Time to Visit
The sanctuary is open year-round from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For photography, morning light on the upper gardens offers good illumination. Weather is most favorable during the late spring and summer months (May-September) with less rainfall. No specific tide requirements apply.
Facts & Legends
A unique feature is the "Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows," a replica of Michelangelo's Pietà carved from a single block of white marble. The sanctuary is also known for its extensive collection of religious statues and shrines from various cultures.
