It is historically significant as it is mentioned in the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana, as a place of refuge for the demon king Ravana. Local legend states that Ravana abducted Princess Sita and kept her in this cave. A small, ancient-looking pool is sometimes pointed out within the cave, said to be where Sita bathed. The cave's entrance is marked by a small Buddhist shrine.
