Red Sea, Eilat, Israel, Asia

The Red Sea is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, situated between Africa and Asia. It connects to the ocean in the south through the Bab el Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden, and in the north via the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez.

Visual Characteristics

The water is characterized by high transparency and a deep blue hue, transitioning to turquoise in shallow coastal lagoons. The sea floor contains extensive fringing reef systems composed of calcium carbonate structures built by polyps. Coastal landscapes vary from white sandy beaches to jagged igneous rock formations and salt flats. The water surface remains relatively calm due to the narrow width of the basin, which averages 280km across.

Location & Access Logistics

The sea is bordered by eight countries: Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Djibouti to the west, and Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, and Yemen to the east. Primary northern access points include the port cities of Eilat (Highway 90) and Aqaba. International shipping transits the Suez Canal at the northwestern terminus. Major coastal hubs are served by international airports in Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, and Jeddah, with extensive ferry networks connecting the eastern and western shores.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Red Sea formed approximately 30 million years ago due to the separation of the African and Arabian plates, making it a young and active rift basin. It is one of the salinitest bodies of water in the world, with salinity levels reaching approximately 41‰. The name is attributed to seasonal blooms of the red-colored cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum, which occasionally tints the surface water.

Key Highlights & Activities

Deep-sea diving and snorkeling are primary activities focused on the diverse coral ecosystems. The northern sections offer wreck diving, most notably the SS Thistlegorm. Commercial shipping is a dominant industrial activity, as the sea carries roughly 10% of global maritime trade. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are prevalent in the northern gulfs due to consistent northerly winds.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Coastal infrastructure varies significantly by region, ranging from highly developed resort zones with full 5G connectivity, desalination plants, and international hospitals to remote, uninhabited stretches. Major ports provide comprehensive maritime services, bunkering, and logistics. Most tourist-accessible beaches feature standardized amenities including restrooms, shade structures, and equipment rentals.

Best Time to Visit

For marine activities, June through August provides the warmest water temperatures, reaching 30°C. However, for land-based comfort, the optimal months are March to May and September to November. Photography is best during mid-day for maximum light penetration into the reef systems, or at sunset when the Edom and Sinai mountains reflect red hues onto the water.

Facts & Legends

A prominent historical narrative is the biblical account of the Exodus, where the sea is described as parting to allow the Israelites to escape Egypt. A modern biological phenomenon known as "Lessepsian migration" occurs here, where species migrate from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean through the man-made Suez Canal, altering the ecological balance of the eastern Mediterranean.
