Historical & Ecological Origin
The area was designated a game reserve in 1964 and upgraded to a national park in 2005, integrating marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Ecologically, it represents a coastal savanna biome with significant mangrove and marine habitats. The park was established to protect both wildlife and the coastal environment.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include game drives to observe wildlife such as elephants, lions, giraffes, and various antelope species. Boat safaris on the Wami River offer opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife. Coastal walks and snorkeling are possible in designated marine areas. Bird watching is a significant activity due to the variety of resident and migratory species.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic facilities include a park entrance gate with information services. There are designated picnic areas with limited shade. Restrooms are available at the main gate and some lodges. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park. Food vendors are not present inside the park; visitors should carry their own provisions or dine at lodges outside the park boundaries.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from June to October, is optimal for game viewing as animals congregate around water sources. The period from December to February also offers good viewing conditions. For birdwatching, the migratory season from November to April is recommended. High tide is preferable for boat safaris on the Wami River.
Facts & Legends
