The tree is a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree under which Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) attained enlightenment. It was brought to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE by Sanghamitta Theri, a Buddhist nun and the daughter of Emperor Ashoka. It is a living relic of Buddhism and has been continuously tended for over two millennia.
