The Sunnylands estate was originally the winter home of Walter and Leonore Annenberg, built between 1964 and 1966. The estate was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones and landscape architect Garrett Eckbo. The gardens were conceived as a showcase of desert horticulture and sustainable landscaping practices, reflecting the unique ecological conditions of the Coachella Valley. The Center and Gardens were opened to the public in 2012 following the Annenberg Foundation's stewardship.
