Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, Hohoe, Ghana, Africa

Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary is a community-led conservation project located in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region, Ghana. It is recognized as a model for ecotourism, where the local population protects a population of True Mona monkeys formerly regarded as sacred messengers of the gods.

Visual Characteristics

The sanctuary consists of a protected floral grove of semi-deciduous tropical forest surrounded by communal farmland. It is characterized by a dense canopy of ancient mahogany and silk cotton trees, with well-cleared walking paths and bamboo-shaded seating areas. Visitors frequently observe groups of monkeys transitioning between the high branches and the forest floor, often interacting directly with humans at the forest edge.

Location & Access Logistics

The site is situated in the village of Tafi Atome, approximately 43km south of Hohoe and 60km north of Ho.

Access is via the main Ho-Hohoe highway, with a clearly marked turn-off leading 5km east to the village.

Visitors can reach Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary using private vehicles or "tro-tros" from the Hohoe or Ho central stations.

A designated visitor reception center at the entrance provides parking and registration services.

Historical & Ecological Origin

For over 200 years, the monkeys were protected by local traditional laws because they were believed to be followers of the village's idol. This protection waned with the spread of Christianity until 1996, when the community, with support from environmental agencies, established the formal sanctuary to restore the forest and protect the primate population. The grove serves as a critical "island" of biodiversity within an agricultural landscape, preserving indigenous plant species and providing a refuge for various forest birds.

Key Highlights & Activities

Guided Primate Viewing: Local guides lead walks into the forest to locate the monkey troops; the monkeys are habituated to humans and often approach visitors who carry bananas.

Cultural Narratives: Tours include detailed accounts of the spiritual history of the village and the traditional taboos that originally saved the monkeys from hunting.

Village Immersion: Visitors can engage with the Tafi Atome community, observing traditional Ewe architecture and rural life.

Nocturnal Tours: Occasional evening walks are organized to observe the forest's nocturnal residents, including pottoes and various insect species.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The sanctuary is managed by a local tourism board with facilities geared toward eco-travelers.

Accommodations: A basic community guesthouse is located on-site, offering simple rooms for overnight stays.

Services: The visitor center includes a small gift shop selling local crafts and public restrooms.

Connectivity: 4G cellular signal is stable within the village and the reception area.

Provisions: Small kiosks in the village sell water and snacks, though there are no formal restaurants within the immediate vicinity.

Best Time to Visit

The monkeys are most active and visible in the early morning (06:00–08:30) and late afternoon (16:00–17:30) when they descend to feed. Visiting during these windows maximizes interaction opportunities. The sanctuary remains open year-round, but the dry season (November to March) offers the most comfortable walking conditions on the forest trails.

Facts & Legends

Local legend states that when the ancestors of the Tafi people migrated from Togo, the monkeys followed them, acting as guides and protectors. To this day, it is a strictly enforced taboo to harm or kill a monkey within the sanctuary boundaries. A unique biological fact is that the True Mona monkeys here have developed a specific "vocabulary" of alarm calls to distinguish between different types of ground and aerial threats.
