Tagbo Falls, Hohoe, Ghana, Africa
Tagbo Falls is a scenic waterfall located near the village of Liati Wote in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region. It is nestled at the base of the Agumatsa Range and is frequently visited in conjunction with Mount Afadja, as both share the same trailhead and visitor center.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall is characterized by a nearly vertical drop of approximately 60 meters over a curved, amphitheater-like rock face. The cliff is composed of dark, sedimentary rock layers often shrouded in ferns and emerald-green moss. The water falls into a shallow, cool pool at the base, surrounded by high canyon walls that create a secluded, misty atmosphere. The surrounding vegetation is a pristine primary rainforest with massive tropical trees and a high density of ferns.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is situated approximately 27km northwest of Hohoe. Access is via the road to Liati Wote. From the Liati Wote Visitor Center, the falls are reached by a relatively easy 45-to-60-minute hike through cocoa plantations and secondary forest. The trail is mostly level, crossing the Tagbo River multiple times via small footbridges. Private vehicle parking is available at the community visitor center at the start of the trail.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Tagbo Falls is a seasonal but perennial watercourse originating from the Togo mountains. Geologically, it is part of the same structural unit as Wli Waterfalls. The area is ecologically significant for its high concentration of butterfly species and rare plants. Historically, the falls have been a source of fresh water and a sacred site for the people of Liati, who have managed the site through community-based ecotourism since the 1990s.
Key Highlights & Activities
Forest Trekking: The walk to the falls is an educational experience, passing through lush cocoa and coffee farms where guides explain local agricultural practices.
Butterfly & Bird Watching: The shaded gorge is a haven for tropical butterflies and forest birds, making it a favorite for nature photographers.
Swimming: The pool at the base is shallow and safe for wading or swimming, offering a refreshing break after the forest walk.
Combined Tours: Most visitors participate in a "double challenge," hiking Mount Afadja in the morning and cooling off at Tagbo Falls in the afternoon.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Infrastructure is managed by the Liati Wote Tourism Committee.
Facilities: The visitor center provides reception services, a small rest area, and public restrooms.
Connectivity: 4G cellular signal is stable in the village but drops significantly as you enter the canyon and forest.
Guides: Mandatory local guides are provided to ensure visitor safety and share cultural insights.
Food: Local snacks and water are available in Liati Wote, but there are no vendors at the falls themselves.
Best Time to Visit
The falls are most spectacular during the rainy season (June to October) when the water volume is heavy. However, the path remains accessible and beautiful during the dry season (November to March), even if the cascade is less powerful. The best time for photography is midday, when the sun is directly overhead and can penetrate the deep forest canopy to light up the waterfall.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests that the falls were discovered by a hunter from Liati who followed a wounded animal into the hidden gorge. The site is considered spiritually "cool" and peaceful; locals often believe that a visit to the falls can cleanse a person of stress and bad luck. It is widely regarded as one of the most "tranquil" waterfalls in Ghana due to its enclosed, cathedral-like rock formation.
