Visual Characteristics
The main prison building is constructed of rough-hewn sandstone blocks. It is a two-story structure with a rectangular footprint. The roof is pitched and covered with metal sheeting. Windows are small and barred. Adjacent structures include a blacksmith shop and a warden's residence, also built primarily of sandstone. The grounds are relatively flat with sparse vegetation.

The Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site is located at 907 Snowy Range Road, Laramie, WY 82070. It is approximately 2 miles west of downtown Laramie. Access is via Snowy Range Road (State Highway 130). Ample free parking is available on-site. Laramie's public transit system does not directly serve the site; a personal vehicle or taxi is recommended.

Construction of the Wyoming Territorial Prison began in 1872 and it operated as a federal penitentiary until 1903. It was then transferred to the state and served as a state farm until 1911. The original purpose was to house federal prisoners from the Wyoming Territory. The site is situated on a plain with typical high-altitude desert vegetation.

Visitors can tour the cell blocks, the warden's residence, and the blacksmith shop. Interpretive exhibits detail the lives of prisoners and staff. Reenactments of historical events are sometimes held. Photography of the structures and grounds is permitted.

Facts & Legends
The prison housed notable outlaws, including George "Big George" Parrott, who was lynched by a mob in 1895 after escaping and killing a deputy. His ghost is rumored to still haunt the prison grounds.
