Anaconda Range, Anaconda, USA Montana, North America
The Anaconda Range is a mountain range located in southwestern Montana, USA, near the city of Anaconda.
Visual Characteristics
The range is characterized by its rugged, glaciated peaks, with elevations reaching over 9,000 feet. The slopes are covered in coniferous forests, primarily Douglas fir and lodgepole pine, transitioning to alpine meadows and bare rock at higher altitudes. Several small alpine lakes are present within the range.
Location & Access Logistics
The Anaconda Range is situated approximately 5 miles west of Anaconda, Montana. Access is primarily via Forest Service roads branching off Interstate 90 and Montana Highway 1. The main access point is the Pintler Scenic Route (US Highway 1), which skirts the southern edge of the range. Several unpaved Forest Service roads provide access to trailheads and dispersed camping areas. Parking is available at designated trailheads, though it can be limited during peak seasons. No public transport services the range directly.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Anaconda Range is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains, formed by tectonic uplift and subsequent glaciation during the Pleistocene epoch. The mountains are composed of Precambrian sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Historically, the area was a significant mining region, particularly for copper, which led to the development of the city of Anaconda.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is a primary activity, with trails such as the Continental Divide Trail traversing parts of the range. Fishing is possible in the alpine lakes and streams. Rock climbing opportunities exist on some of the steeper faces. Wildlife viewing, including elk and bighorn sheep, is common.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Limited infrastructure exists within the range. Designated campgrounds are available in surrounding national forest areas. Restrooms are typically found at major trailheads. Cell phone signal is generally absent within the core of the range. No food vendors are present within the Anaconda Range itself; provisions should be made in Anaconda.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for visiting are July through September, when snow has typically receded from higher elevations. Mid-morning to late afternoon offers the best natural light for photography. Access to higher elevation trails may be restricted by snow well into June.
Facts & Legends
The Anaconda Range is home to the Anaconda Smelter Stack, once the tallest free-standing masonry structure in the world, a remnant of the area's mining past. Local folklore sometimes speaks of elusive mountain spirits said to inhabit the higher peaks.
