Georgetown Lake is a reservoir located in southwestern Montana, USA, near the town of Anaconda.

Visual Characteristics

The lake has a surface area of approximately 3,000 acres. Its shoreline is characterized by a mix of coniferous forests and open meadows. Water color varies from deep blue to greenish depending on depth and sediment load. Surrounding terrain includes rolling hills and the Deer Lodge National Forest.

Location & Access Logistics

Georgetown Lake is situated 15 miles east of Anaconda, Montana, along Interstate 90. Access is primarily via Montana Highway 1, which skirts the southern edge of the lake. Several Forest Service roads provide additional access points. Ample parking is available at designated boat launches and day-use areas. No public transport services operate directly to the lake.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The lake was formed by the construction of the Georgetown Dam, completed in 1910. The dam was built by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company to provide water for its mining operations and hydroelectric power generation. Ecologically, it is a man-made reservoir supporting a diverse aquatic ecosystem.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include boating, fishing for trout and salmon, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Hiking trails are present around the lake and in the adjacent national forest. Camping is permitted at designated campgrounds. Ice fishing is a winter activity when conditions permit.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at major access points and campgrounds. Picnic tables and fire rings are provided in day-use areas. Shade is available from natural tree cover in some locations. Cell phone signal is intermittent and generally weak across most of the lake area.

Best Time to Visit

The best months for water-based activities are June through September. For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer favorable lighting conditions. High tide is not a relevant factor for this freshwater reservoir.

Facts & Legends

A local legend speaks of a large, unidentified fish said to inhabit the deepest parts of the lake, though no verifiable evidence supports this claim. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company's historical presence significantly shaped the region's development and the lake's creation.
