Visual Characteristics

The basilica is constructed primarily of Indiana limestone. Its dominant feature is a large, copper-clad dome, 126 feet in diameter, rising 225 feet above the ground. The exterior exhibits classical proportions with a symmetrical facade, Corinthian columns, and a portico. The interior features vaulted ceilings, stained-glass windows, and intricate mosaic work.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Basilica of Saint Mary began in 1907 and was completed in 1914. It was designed by architect Edward L. Masqueray, who also designed the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The original purpose was to serve as the cathedral for the Diocese of St. Cloud before becoming the parish church for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. It was elevated to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Pius X in 1913.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can attend daily Mass and other religious services. Guided tours of the basilica's architecture and history are offered on select days. The basilica hosts concerts and cultural events throughout the year. Photography is permitted within the nave and sanctuary during non-service hours.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the building. Limited shaded areas are present on the grounds. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are not located on-site, but numerous dining establishments are within a 0.5km radius along Nicollet Avenue.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal interior lighting and photography, visiting during midday hours (10:00 AM to 2:00 PM) when sunlight streams through the stained-glass windows is recommended. The months of May through October offer the most pleasant weather for accessing the site. No specific tide requirements apply.

Facts & Legends

The basilica's dome was inspired by the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. A unique architectural detail is the use of a specific type of granite quarried in Cold Spring, Minnesota, for some of its exterior elements.
