Cedar Lake is a natural lake located within the city limits of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is part of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes.

The lake has a surface area of approximately 170 acres. Its shoreline is characterized by a mix of sandy beaches and wooded areas with mature deciduous trees. Water clarity varies seasonally but is generally moderate. The lakebed consists of sand and some muck.

Cedar Lake is situated west of downtown Minneapolis. Access is via West Lake Street and Cedar Lake Parkway. Parking is available in designated lots around the lake, including a primary lot on the east side and smaller lots on the north and west sides. Public transport options include Metro Transit bus routes 6 and 12, which stop within a 0.5km radius of the lake's main access points.

Cedar Lake is a natural glacial lake, formed by the retreat of the last ice sheet. It is part of the watershed that feeds into the Mississippi River. The lake has been a recreational area for the city since the late 19th century.

For photography, early morning or late afternoon light offers optimal conditions. The best months for general recreation are June through August, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 21-27°C (70-80°F). Swimming conditions are best when water temperatures are above 18°C (65°F).

Facts & Legends

A specific historical oddity is the presence of a submerged concrete structure, believed to be remnants of an old boathouse or dock, located approximately 50 meters offshore on the western side of the lake. Local folklore sometimes refers to it as the "Lost Boathouse."
