Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic, Europe
Charles Bridge is a medieval stone arch bridge crossing the Vltava River in Prague, Czech Republic, connecting Old Town with the Lesser Town (Malá Strana). It serves as a pedestrian-only thoroughfare and remains the city’s most recognized historical link between the Prague Castle complex and the eastern districts.
Visual Characteristics
The bridge is 516 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, supported by 16 sandstone arches protected by ice guards. It is constructed from Bohemian sandstone blocks and features 30 primarily Baroque-style statues and statuaries mounted on the balustrades. Three bridge towers, characterized by gothic masonry and pointed roofs, mark the entrances at both ends.
Location & Access Logistics
The bridge spans the Vltava River at the western end of Karlova Street. From the central Old Town Square, it is 600 meters west on foot. Public transport access is via the Staroměstská (Line A) or Malostranská metro stations, and the Karlovy lázně tram stop. Vehicle traffic is prohibited; the nearest parking is an underground garage at Jan Palach Square.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction began in 1357 under the patronage of King Charles IV and was completed in 1402. The architect was Peter Parler, who designed the bridge to replace the Judith Bridge, which was destroyed by a flood in 1342. Its original purpose was to facilitate trade and royal processions along the Royal Route.
Key Highlights & Activities
Pedestrians cross the bridge to examine the individual statues, including the prominent bronze figure of St. John of Nepomuk. Climbing the Old Town Bridge Tower provides an elevated view of the bridge's geometry. Street artists and musicians operate within designated zones along the span during daylight hours.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no restrooms or shaded areas on the bridge itself. 5G cellular coverage is consistent across the entire span. Food vendors are restricted from the bridge, though numerous restaurants and kiosks are located immediately adjacent to the bridge towers on both riverbanks.
Best Time to Visit
Optimal lighting for photography occurs at sunrise, which also avoids the high pedestrian density that peaks between 10:00 and 18:00. May, June, and September offer the most stable weather conditions. During winter months, the bridge is frequently subjected to heavy fog, affecting long-distance visibility of the castle.
Facts & Legends
Historical accounts claim that egg yolks were mixed into the mortar during construction to strengthen the structure's resistance to river currents. A specific "secret" for visitors is the polished bronze cross located on the stone railing near statue number 18; touching it is locally cited as a method to ensure a return to Prague.
