Křivoklát Castle, Prague, Czech Republic, Europe
Křivoklát Castle is a royal Gothic fortress located in the Rakovník District of the Central Bohemian Region, approximately 50 kilometers west of Prague. It is situated within the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area, overlooking the Rakovnický stream near its confluence with the Berounka River.
Visual Characteristics
The castle is defined by its massive round bergfried tower and a triangular ground plan. It is constructed primarily from local stone and brick, featuring gray-toned masonry and steep slate roofs. Key architectural elements include the late Gothic chapel with its intricate star vaulting and a massive Great Hall, which is the second largest of its kind in the Czech Republic after the Vladislav Hall in Prague.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located at Křivoklát 47. Access from Prague is via the S6 or R16 train lines to Beroun, with a transfer to a local train toward Rakovník, stopping at the "Křivoklát" station followed by a 10-meter uphill walk. By car, it is accessible via the D5 motorway and road 236. A central paid parking lot is located in the village, approximately 400 meters from the castle entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Established in the 12th century as a hunting lodge for the Přemyslid dynasty, the castle was significantly expanded by Kings Přemysl Otakar II and Vladislaus II Jagiello. The surrounding area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, characterized by ancient broad-leaved forests and rocky outcrops that have remained largely undisturbed due to the castle's historical status as a royal hunting ground.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can choose from multiple tour routes including the Gothic interiors, the castle chapel, and the library containing over 52,000 volumes. The "Knight's Hall" features a collection of Gothic paintings and sculptures. The castle courtyard hosts seasonal medieval fairs, craft markets, and theatrical performances.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms are situated in the first courtyard. The castle contains a restaurant and a traditional tavern offering regional cuisine. While the steep approach is paved, it remains a physical climb; however, most paths are well-shaded by the surrounding forest. 5G and 4G mobile signals are available throughout the castle complex and the village.
Best Time to Visit
The best light for photography is in the early morning for the eastern towers or at sunset from the viewpoint on the opposite hill (Vyhlídka u Trojice). The castle is open year-round, but full tour access is restricted on Mondays during the off-season (November–March). October is particularly visually distinct due to the autumn foliage of the surrounding biosphere.
Facts & Legends
Křivoklát served as a high-security prison for centuries; its most famous inmate was the English alchemist Edward Kelley, who was imprisoned here by Rudolf II for failing to produce gold. Legend states that Kelley attempted to escape by rappelling down the tower, but the rope snapped, leading to a fall that resulted in the permanent injury of his leg.
