Cranesville Swamp Preserve is a protected wetland area located in the western Maryland panhandle, near the border with West Virginia.

The preserve features a sphagnum moss-dominated wetland ecosystem. Dominant vegetation includes various species of sedges, pitcher plants, and stunted coniferous trees such as black spruce and tamarack. The water is typically dark and acidic due to the decomposition of organic matter.

Cranesville Swamp Preserve is situated approximately 15 miles west of Hagerstown, Maryland. Access is via Maryland Route 51 North. Turn west onto Cranesville Road. Parking is available at the designated trailhead. No public transport services the preserve directly.

This area is classified as a temperate Appalachian bog, a rare ecosystem type. Its formation is linked to glacial meltwater and the subsequent accumulation of peat over thousands of years, creating conditions suitable for specialized plant life.

Facts & Legends
The preserve is one of the southernmost sphagnum bogs in the Appalachian Mountains, making its existence geologically significant. Local folklore sometimes refers to the area as "The Whispering Woods" due to the sounds of wind through the trees.
