The Dougga Forum is an ancient Roman public space located in the archaeological site of Dougga, Tunisia.
This area served as a central gathering point within the Roman city.
Visual Characteristics
The forum is an open rectangular plaza paved with large, irregular stone slabs. Surrounding the plaza are the remains of several Roman structures, including the Capitolium, the Temple of Juno, and the Arch of Trajan. The primary building material visible is local limestone, weathered to a pale grey and ochre hue. Foundations and lower sections of walls are intact, with scattered column fragments and carved stone blocks lying on the ground.
Location & Access Logistics
Dougga is situated approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Tunis. Access is via the P17 national road, turning off towards the village of Thugga (Dougga). The archaeological site is signposted from the village. Parking is available at a designated lot adjacent to the main entrance of the site, approximately 200 meters from the forum. No public transport directly serves the archaeological site; visitors typically arrive by private vehicle or organized tour from Tunis or nearby towns like Béja.

The Dougga Forum developed over several centuries of Roman occupation, with significant construction occurring during the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE. It was the civic and religious heart of the Roman city of Thugga, a prosperous agricultural center. The site is located on a plateau with a dry, Mediterranean climate, characterized by scrub vegetation and olive groves in the surrounding landscape.

The Arch of Trajan, located at one end of the forum, was erected in 114 CE to commemorate Emperor Trajan's visit and his granting of municipal status to Thugga. A specific tip for visitors is to look for the well-preserved mosaic fragments near the Temple of Juno, often overlooked.
