Eye of the Sun, Ashdod, Israel, Asia

The Eye of the Sun, by Motti Mizrachi is a massive environmental sculpture and landmark located in the southern coastal district of Ashdod, Israel. It is situated at the center of a large traffic circle on the city's southern gateway, serving as a symbolic entry point to the urban area.

Visual Characteristics

The sculpture is an enormous, elliptical structure measuring 18 meters in height and 26 meters in width, constructed from silver-painted steel and yellow-tinted glass. One side represents the sun with a bright yellow disk, while the other side features a silver-white finish representing the moon. At night, the structure is illuminated from within, creating a glowing effect that reflects off the surrounding paved surfaces and polished metal.

Location & Access Logistics

The monument is located at the intersection of Moshe Dayan Boulevard and Altalena Boulevard in southern Ashdod. It is easily accessible via Highway 4 by exiting at the Ashdod South interchange and heading west toward the coast. While there is no dedicated parking lot for the sculpture itself, visitors can find street parking in the adjacent Rova Tet-Zayin (Quarter 16) residential neighborhood or at the nearby beaches. Several local bus lines, including 2 and 5, stop within walking distance of the intersection.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Inaugurated in 2011, the sculpture was created by renowned Israeli artist Motti Mizrachi. It was commissioned as part of Ashdod's urban renewal initiative to integrate contemporary art into public infrastructure. Geologically, the site sits on a reclaimed section of the southern coastal dune belt, which has been stabilized by urban development. The sculpture's design is intended to harmonize with the intense Mediterranean light and the circular motion of the surrounding traffic.

Key Highlights & Activities

The primary activity is viewing and photography, particularly from the surrounding pedestrian walkways. The sculpture's reflective surfaces and transparent glass elements change appearance depending on the angle of the sun and atmospheric conditions. Many visitors stop at the landmark while traveling between the city center and the southern Ashdod-Yam park or the dunes.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The sculpture is located within a functional traffic roundabout and does not feature interior access or immediate seating. The surrounding area is fully paved with wide sidewalks and crosswalks for safe pedestrian approach. There are no restrooms or food vendors at the monument itself, but full commercial services are available 500 meters north in the residential quarters. The site is covered by a strong 5G cellular signal.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal time for photography is during the late afternoon "golden hour" when the sun's low angle penetrates the yellow glass, or at night when the internal LED lighting system is active. The sculpture is open to public view 24 hours a day. Clear winter days provide the highest visibility for capturing the contrast between the silver steel and the blue sky.

Facts & Legends

A verified technical oddity is that the sculpture's elliptical shape and tilt are mathematically calculated to align with the sun's trajectory during specific seasonal solstices. Local residents often refer to it simply as "The Eye," and it has become one of the most photographed modern landmarks in the southern region of Israel.
