Bus routes 80 and E4 stop near the park.

The fort was constructed between 1861 and 1864 as part of the Civil War defenses of Washington. It was named after Brigadier General Joseph Totten. The site was designed to protect the capital from Confederate invasion. The surrounding parkland is part of the Rock Creek watershed, characterized by Piedmont geological formations.

During the Civil War, Fort Totten was one of the largest and most heavily armed forts in the Washington D.C. defense system. A specific tip for visitors is to look for the remnants of the original powder magazines, partially visible beneath the earthworks on the western side of the fort.
