United States Capitol, Northeast Washington, USA Washington DC, North America

The United States Capitol is the meeting place of the United States Congress and the seat of the legislative branch of the U.S. federal government. It is located in Washington, D.C., on Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall.

Visual Characteristics

The Capitol building is constructed primarily of white marble and sandstone. It features a distinctive cast-iron dome, painted white, which stands 288 feet (88 meters) high from the base to the top of the Statue of Freedom. The building's neoclassical architectural style is evident in its symmetrical facade, columns, and pediments. The structure has a total length of 751 feet (229 meters) and a maximum width of 350 feet (107 meters).

Location & Access Logistics

The Capitol is situated at the intersection of East Capitol Street and First Street SE. It is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of the White House. Public transportation is readily available; the Capitol South Metro station (Blue, Orange, and Silver lines) is located directly south of the building. Several bus routes also serve the area, including routes 30, 32, 34, 36, and 39. Limited metered parking is available on surrounding streets, with larger parking garages located further from the immediate vicinity.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Capitol began on September 18, 1793. The original design was by William Thornton, with subsequent contributions from architects like Stephen Hallet, George Hadfield, and Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The building's purpose was to house the U.S. Congress. The dome was completed in 1863 during the Civil War.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can participate in free guided tours of the Capitol building, which typically include the Rotunda, Statuary Hall, and the House and Senate chambers (when not in session). Photography is permitted in most public areas. The Capitol grounds offer walking paths for exploring the exterior architecture and landscaping.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the Capitol building. Shaded areas are present on the Capitol grounds. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the building and on the grounds. Food vendors are not typically located directly on Capitol grounds, but numerous dining options are available in the surrounding Capitol Hill Neighborhood.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal interior lighting and fewer crowds, early morning tours on weekdays are recommended. The best months for visiting are typically April through June and September through October, offering moderate temperatures. The building is accessible year-round.

Facts & Legends

The Statue of Freedom atop the dome faces east, towards the rising sun, symbolizing the nation's future. During the Civil War, the dome was still under construction, and its scaffolding was sometimes mistaken for enemy positions by Confederate troops.
