The Library of Congress is the research arm of the United States Congress and the nation's oldest federal cultural institution, located in Washington, D.C.

It serves as the de facto national library of the United States.

Visual Characteristics

The Thomas Jefferson Building, the library's original structure, is constructed primarily of white granite and limestone. It features a Beaux-Arts architectural style with a central dome. The interior is characterized by marble columns, ornate plasterwork, and extensive use of mosaic tiles. The Great Hall measures approximately 160 feet long and 80 feet wide, with a ceiling height of 65 feet.

Location & Access Logistics

The Library of Congress is situated in Northeast Washington, D.C., between First Street SE and Second Street SE, and East Capitol Street SE and Independence Avenue SE. It is accessible via the Capitol South Metro station (Blue, Orange, and Silver lines), approximately a 5-minute walk. Limited street parking is available in the surrounding area, though metered parking is often occupied. The nearest parking garage is the Capitol Hill Parking Garage at 201 East Capitol Street NE, approximately 0.3 miles away.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Established by an act of Congress on April 24, 1800, the Library of Congress was initially housed in the U.S. Capitol. The current Thomas Jefferson Building was completed in 1897, designed by architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul Pelz, and built by the general contractor Bernard R. Green. Its original purpose was to provide reference materials for members of Congress.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the Great Hall, view exhibits in various galleries, and attend public lectures and concerts. Access to the main reading rooms is restricted to researchers with congressional or government credentials. Self-guided tours are permitted in public areas.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on multiple floors. Limited seating is provided in public areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the buildings. No food vendors are located within the Library of Congress buildings; however, dining options are available in the surrounding Capitol Hill Neighborhood.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography of the interior architecture, late morning or early afternoon is recommended. The library is open year-round, with fewer crowds typically observed during weekdays outside of federal holidays. No specific tide requirements apply.

Facts & Legends

The Library of Congress holds over 170 million items in its collection. A specific tip for visitors is to look for the inscription "The light of knowledge illuminates the world" above the entrance to the Great Hall.
