Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Northeast Washington, USA Washington DC, North America

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is a botanical garden located in Northeast Washington, D.C. It is the only National Park Service garden in the United States dedicated to aquatic plants.

Visual Characteristics

The gardens feature 12 acres of ponds containing a diverse collection of water lilies, lotuses, and other aquatic flora. The water bodies are interconnected and surrounded by naturalistic landscaping with trees and open grassy areas. During blooming seasons, the ponds are covered with a dense display of flowers in shades of pink, white, and purple.

Location & Access Logistics

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is situated at 1550 Anacostia Avenue NE, Washington, D.C. It is approximately 7 miles east of the U.S. Capitol Building. Access is via Kenilworth Avenue NE (Route 295). Parking is available on-site in a designated lot. The closest Metro station is Deanwood (Orange Line), which is approximately 1.5 miles away; a bus connection (e.g., Metrobus 96) is required from Deanwood to reach the gardens.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The gardens were established in 1938 by W. B. Shaw, who cultivated water lilies and lotuses on the site. The land was acquired by the National Park Service in 1950. The site's ecological significance lies in its role as a habitat for various aquatic species and migratory birds within an urban environment.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe a wide variety of water lilies, including tropical and day-blooming varieties, and lotuses. The park offers walking paths around the ponds. Early morning visits are recommended for viewing the peak bloom of many species. The park hosts an annual "Night Sky" event during the summer months when the water lilies bloom at night.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on-site. Limited shade is provided by mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No food vendors are located within the gardens; visitors should bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The peak blooming season for water lilies and lotuses is from June through September. For optimal viewing of blooming flowers, visit in the morning, typically between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. High tide is not a relevant factor for visiting the gardens.

Facts & Legends

A unique aspect of the gardens is the presence of the Anacostia River Trail, which runs adjacent to the park, offering opportunities for cycling and walking. The gardens are home to a significant population of dragonflies and damselflies, which are integral to the ecosystem.
