Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the Green River Lakes Road (Forest Service Road 470) from Pinedale. This unpaved road is approximately 30 miles long and requires a high-clearance vehicle, especially in early summer due to snowmelt. The road terminates at a parking area. No public transport is available.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lakes are glacially formed, carved by ancient ice sheets that once covered the Wind River Range. They are part of the headwaters of the Green River, a major tributary of the Colorado River.

Best Time to Visit
The primary visiting season is from July through September, after snowmelt has cleared the access road. Mid-morning and late afternoon offer optimal lighting for photography due to the angle of the sun on the peaks.
Facts & Legends
The Green River Lakes are considered the official source of the Green River. A specific geological feature known as the "Square Top" mountain dominates the western skyline of the lakes.
