Hann Park and Zoo, Dakar, Senegal, Africa

Hann Park and Zoo (Parc Forestier et Zoologique de Hann) is a 60-hectare forest reserve and zoological park located in the Hann Bel-Air district of Dakar, Senegal. Established in 1903 as a garden for botanical trials, it serves as a major "green lung" for the city and a center for environmental education.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a diverse botanical garden with over 200 species of trees, including massive eucalyptus and teak stands. The landscape includes a large central lake, paved walking paths, and fenced animal enclosures. The atmosphere is significantly cooler and more humid than the surrounding urban areas due to the dense canopy cover and proximity to the Atlantic coast.

Location & Access Logistics

The site is situated on the Route de Front de Terre, approximately 6 kilometers northeast of the Place de l'Indépendance. It is easily accessible via the N1 highway. Visitors can reach the park using Dakar Dem Dikk bus lines 12, 13, and 15, which stop near the main entrance. A large, shaded parking area is available for private vehicles at the front gate.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Originally created by the French colonial administration as the "Jardin d'Essais de Hann" to study tropical plant species, it was converted into a forest reserve and zoo in 1947. The park's ecosystem is unique in Dakar, functioning as a sanctuary for local flora and fauna amidst heavy industrial and residential development in the Hann area.

Key Highlights & Activities

The zoological section houses a variety of West African wildlife, including lions, gazelles, hyenas, and primates. A dedicated "Espace Enfants" features playgrounds and pony rides. Educational activities include guided tours focused on forestry and botany, while the shaded trails are popular for jogging and family picnics.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The park is equipped with several kiosks selling snacks and drinks, along with a central restaurant near the lake. Public restrooms are located at the entrance and within the zoo section. 4G and 5G cellular signals are reliable throughout the grounds. Ample natural shade is provided by the dense forest, making it one of the few outdoor sites in Dakar protected from direct equatorial sun.

Best Time to Visit

The park is open daily from 08:00 to 18:30. Weekdays offer a quieter experience for those looking to observe wildlife, while Sunday afternoons are characterized by a lively, festive atmosphere with local families. The dry season (November to May) is the most comfortable time for walking the extensive trail network.

Facts & Legends

The park's lake is home to a significant population of migratory birds, leading many locals to consider it a "living museum" of Senegalese biodiversity. A local tip is to visit the arboretum section, which contains some of the oldest documented trees in the Cape Verde Peninsula, some exceeding a century in age.
