Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a ski resort located in Teton Village, Wyoming, near the town of Jackson Hole.

The resort is situated at the base of the Teton Range, offering extensive skiable terrain.

Visual Characteristics

The resort's base area features a collection of timber and stone buildings with pitched roofs, designed to blend with the mountain environment. Ski slopes are carved into the steep, granite faces of Rendezvous Mountain and Apres Vous Mountain. The dominant colors are the white of snow in winter, the green of pine and fir forests in summer, and the grey and brown of exposed rock at higher elevations. The resort's vertical drop is significant, with the summit of Rendezvous Mountain reaching an elevation of 10,450 feet.

Location & Access Logistics

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is located 12 miles northwest of the town of Jackson, Wyoming. Access is primarily via Teton Village Road, which connects to US Highway 89/191/26. The drive from Jackson typically takes 20-30 minutes. Ample paid parking is available at the base area, including overflow lots during peak season. Public transportation is provided by the START Bus system, with Route 29 serving Teton Village from Jackson. During the winter season, a free shuttle operates within Teton Village.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The resort officially opened in 1965. Its development was spearheaded by Paul McCollister. The site is part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, characterized by alpine and subalpine environments. The Teton Range itself is geologically young, formed by fault-block uplift, resulting in dramatic, sheer mountain faces.

Key Highlights & Activities

Winter activities include skiing and snowboarding across 2,500 acres of terrain, with a focus on challenging steeps and off-piste opportunities. The Aerial Tram provides access to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain for advanced skiers and sightseers. Summer activities include hiking, mountain biking, and scenic tram rides. The Via Ferrata climbing route is also available. Guided backcountry tours are offered for both winter and summer seasons.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available in the main base lodge and various other buildings throughout the resort. Shade is provided by trees at lower elevations and by resort structures. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the base area and on some of the lower mountain trails. Food vendors and restaurants are located within Teton Village, including options at the base of the resort.

Best Time to Visit

For skiing and snowboarding, the best months are typically January through March, offering the most consistent snowpack. For hiking and summer activities, July and August provide the warmest weather and clearest trails. The Aerial Tram operates daily from mid-December to early April and from mid-June to mid-September. Photography is best in the early morning or late afternoon for optimal lighting on the Teton peaks.

Facts & Legends

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is known for its challenging terrain, often cited as having some of the steepest in North America. A local legend speaks of the "Phantom of Rendezvous Mountain," a supposed spectral figure seen by skiers on foggy days, though no verifiable accounts exist.
