Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve, Jackson Hole, USA Wyoming, North America
The Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve is a protected area located in Grand Teton National Park, near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It encompasses a significant portion of Phelps Lake and its surrounding forest.
Visual Characteristics
The preserve features a 1,000-acre area of boreal forest dominated by lodgepole pine and aspen. Phelps Lake, a glacial lake, exhibits clear, deep blue water. The terrain includes granite outcrops and a shoreline with mixed gravel and sand.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to the preserve is via the unpaved Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve Road, which branches off Teton Park Road approximately 15 miles north of the town of Jackson. The road is 3 miles long and leads to a parking area with a capacity of 50 vehicles. During peak season (mid-May to mid-October), private vehicle access to the preserve is restricted, and visitors must utilize a free shuttle bus service operating from the preserve's entrance station. Parking is not permitted along the preserve road. The nearest public transport is limited to seasonal park shuttles which do not directly serve the preserve entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve was established in 2001 following a donation of land by Laurance S. Rockefeller to the National Park Service. The area's geology is characterized by glacial moraines and the erosive forces of past ice ages that formed Phelps Lake. Ecologically, it represents a transition zone between the Teton Range foothills and the Jackson Hole valley floor.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is permitted on designated trails, including the Phelps Lake Trail (7.2 miles roundtrip to the lake's outlet) and the Woodland Trail (0.5 miles loop). The preserve offers opportunities for wildlife observation, including elk, moose, and various bird species. Fishing is allowed in Phelps Lake, subject to Wyoming Game and Fish regulations. Photography is possible, particularly of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Infrastructure & Amenities
A visitor center is located at the trailhead, offering interpretive displays and information. Restrooms are available at the visitor center and the main parking area. Limited shade is provided by the forest canopy. Cell phone signal is generally unreliable within the preserve.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for visiting are July and August, offering the most stable weather conditions. For photography, early morning and late afternoon provide optimal lighting on the lake and mountains. Phelps Lake is accessible year-round, but winter access is limited to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Facts & Legends
A unique aspect of the preserve is its emphasis on quiet contemplation and minimal impact. Visitors are encouraged to walk softly and observe nature without disruption. The preserve's management prioritizes a low-impact visitor experience, with strict regulations on group sizes and noise levels.
