Jackson Town Square is a central public space located in the heart of Jackson, Wyoming. It serves as a primary gathering point and commercial hub for the city.

Visual Characteristics

The square is defined by its perimeter of log-cabin-style buildings, housing retail shops and restaurants. At its center stands a prominent archway constructed from shed elk antlers, a recurring motif throughout the square. The ground surface is paved with concrete and asphalt, with some areas featuring decorative brickwork. Green spaces are minimal, primarily consisting of planters and small trees.

Location & Access Logistics

Jackson Town Square is situated at the intersection of Broadway and Cache Street in downtown Jackson, Wyoming. It is approximately 0.5km from the main entrance of the Jackson Hole Airport (JAC). Parking is available in designated public lots surrounding the square, with metered street parking also present. Several local bus routes, including the START Bus, service stops within a 0.2km radius of the square.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The square was established in the early 20th century as the central business district for the growing town of Jackson. The antler arches are a tradition dating back to the 1950s, utilizing antlers shed annually by elk from the National Elk Refuge. The town's development is intrinsically linked to the surrounding Teton Mountain Range and the agricultural and ranching history of the valley.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the antler arches, browse the shops and galleries lining the square, and attend seasonal events such as the Jackson Hole Rodeo or the Jackson Hole Farmers Market. Photography of the antler arches is a common activity. The square also serves as a starting point for exploring the downtown area.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Public restrooms are available in a building located on the west side of the square. Limited shaded areas are provided by awnings of surrounding businesses and a few strategically placed trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong within the square. Numerous food vendors and restaurants are located directly on or adjacent to the square.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography of the antler arches, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. The months of June through September offer the most favorable weather conditions for outdoor activities. The square is accessible year-round.

Facts & Legends

A unique local tradition involves the annual auction of shed antlers collected from the National Elk Refuge, with proceeds supporting wildlife conservation efforts. The antlers for the arches are replaced periodically as they weather and degrade.
